As evident by the numerous and highly publicized events over the last few years, NCAA member institutions face significant compliance risk. In a day and age of 24x7 television media coverage and instantaneous access to information via social media, blogs, and other forms of electronic media, we’ve witnessed the consequences first hand. Consequences for noncompliance have included the obvious financial consequences, competitive consequences such as loss of scholarships, and reputational consequences that can linger long after sanctions have been lifted.
While the NCAA requires each institution to establish an athletics compliance program, the use of a risk-based approach has not been common in NCAA athletics compliance. By understanding the benefits and procedures of risk assessments, athletic compliance officers can make risk assessment a constructive part of their repertoires to ensure that they have objective means of identifying potential gaps in compliance, remediating those gaps, and ultimately mitigating compliance risk.
