Federal and State healthcare regulators are now asking providers and health plans to assess their compliance programs and demonstrate that they are working. In support of this goal, the New York State Office of Medicaid Inspector General (NY OMIG) has published a Compliance Program Self-Assessment Tool for this purpose. The tool is organized into 8 sections that are similar to the Seven Elements of Effective Compliance and Ethics Programs as set forth in the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, with an additional set of measures focused on non-intimidation and non-retaliation.
At Compliance 360, we have incorporated the NY OMIG Compliance Program Self-Assessment Tool into the Compliance 360 system to automate the management, assessment and reporting process. The system includes the assessment questions in each of the eight categories defined in the NY OMIG Compliance Program Self-Assessment Tool.
For each question, the assessment will automatically create a task based on “YES” or “NO” answers. “YES” answers result in tasks being created for linking evidence documents back to the requirement using the Virtual Evidence Room™. “NO” answers result in tasks being created to identify the compliance gap(s) and initiate remediation actions.
At any time, online dashboards and reports show the overall compliance status with all completed and open tasks, task owners, due dates, etc. The CCO can view their overall compliance status at any time, and receive alerts regarding any critical tasks that are overdue.
